On the Road Physiotherapy answers the question – Is fish oil helpful?

Fish oil is one of those hot topics in every over 50’s conversation. Its either the secret fix to pain or fix for brain function.
When our mobile Physiotherapy team is asked about the benefits and what we advocate we refer them to the science.
The link below leads to a great article by Havard Health Publishing online site which give a good break down. We have summarised a few points below.
What is fish oil and why is it important?
Fish oil like it sounds is the oil that can be extracted from fish which is high in omega-3 fatty acids. These can also be derived from some plant based sources such as flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and canola oil.
Omega-3 fatty acids play important roles in brain function, normal growth and development, and inflammation. Deficiencies have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, some cancers, mood disorders, arthritis, and more. But that doesn’t mean taking high doses translates to better health and disease prevention.
Evidence has been varied over the years but more recently it has been concluded that omega-3 fatty acid supplements did nothing to reduce heart attacks, strokes, or deaths from heart disease in middle-age men and women without any known risk factors for heart disease.
In regards to cancer recent studies did not show any decreased risk of cancer. However, some earlier research suggested diets high in fatty fish or fish oil supplements might reduce the risk of certain cancers.
